Difference between VYOMANAUTS, COSMONAUTS, ASTRONAUTS & so on… (SHORTs)
Generally, we confuse between the aforementioned terms. So, let us clear the meaning of all such terms once and for all.
Since we are going to use the term “Space Traveler” pretty frequently in this article, so let me first just define what we meant by SPACE TRAVELER.
SPACE TRAVELER : A member of the crew of a spaceship or other spacecraft that travels beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
1. ASTRONAUT
- An AMERICAN space traveler, but colloquially, used to refer all (countries) SPACE TRAVELERS.
- Coined from Ancient Greek.
2. VYOMANAUT
- A person who travels in space for the INDIAN Space Program, an INDIAN Astronaut.
- Coined from Sanskrit व्योमन् (vyoman, “sky, space”) + -naut.
- Given by ISRO.
3. COSMONAUT
- An astronaut, especially a RUSSIAN or SOVIET one.
- Coined from Russian + Ancient Greek.
4. SPATIONAUT
- A FRENCH astronaut.
- (colloquial) A EUROPEAN astronaut, specifically one representing ESA.
5. TAIKONAUT
- A person who travels in space for the Chinese space program, a Chinese astronaut.
- Coined from Mandarin.
6. ASTRONAUTESS (Spacewomen)
- A female Astronaut.
- From Astronaut + ess.
NOTE : Above 5 terms can be considered as HYPONYMS of term ASTRONAUT.
Hyponyms are words that are the specific examples of a general word, a ‘superordinate’.
