English is the language of science, aviation, computers, diplomacy, and tourism. Knowing English increases your chances of getting a good job in a multinational company within your home country or for finding work abroad. It’s also the language of international communication, the media and the internet, so learning English is important for socializing and entertainment as well as work.

In these days every person wants to adopt the English profession. No doubt English is spoken at a useful level by some 1.75 billion people worldwide.

In this blog, I am going to talk about two types of students who chose English literature and linguistics after completing their intermediate education. I will also suggest which type of students should go for this and which type of students should not go for this. In our society, you can find the misconception about the English language. most of the people think that the person who can speak English very well can find a job more easily and can be more successful in life but this is not true, The English language is just a tool of communication, not a tool of measuring intelligence.

Most of the students especially in Pakistani after completing their intermediate education go for English literature and some go for linguistics, but after spending two or three years in this field they realized that this was not suitable for them and they have just wasted their precious time and money and got nothing from this.

No doubt the English language is an international language. You go everywhere people speak the English language if not they can easily understand it. The English language is the most popular and common in the world. The is the language that is most understanding and can speak by the people. This language opens a lot of opportunities. By learning English language Pakistani students can communicate with the other international companies in foreign countries. It’s very easy for English-speaking students to find a job in foreign countries. And can easily be survived in foreign countries.

Students who should go for English literature and linguistics:

No doubt there is a great scope of English literature and linguistics in all over the world. Here I am enlisting some professions where masters degree in English literature and linguistics can help. Students who interested in these professions must go for doing MA English but who have no interest in such professions I will suggest you not to waste time and money in doing your master in English. List of MA English professions is below:

There are several job opportunities in the government sector as well as in the private sector for MA English degree holders. They have bright chances to settle in abroad as well. Only sky is the limit for them. The many fields of entertainment also present postgraduate students of English literature with ample career opportunities. Those candidates who have good skills in writing can find them employed as campaign managers, speechwriters and other positions that require the sophisticated use of written and spoken English. I would like to suggest to the students, who appear as private candidates, please never seek any short cut. There is no short cut in literature. It is a vast sea of books. Read, read and read if you want to succeed. Read and comprehend textbooks instead of only cramming publishers’ notes. One more thing I would like to suggest to the students of MA English literature that they should choose Linguistics as an optional subject in part two; because Linguistics is the only subject that enables the students to learn/improve better pronunciation skills, grammar skills, sentence structure, accent by learning stress pattern and intonation etc. Linguistics also enhance the students listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Dear readers, Insha’Allah! I shall write my next blog on the importance of Linguistics.

Students who should not go for English literature and linguistics:

Everyone is born with specific qualities some students are good in Medical Sciences, some are good in Engineering Sciences and some are good in the study in law, in short, everyone has his taste. In the same way, some people are good at teaching, some can handle technology better than others, some can perform well as doctors. Some are good in public speaking and can serve best as politicians and so on. My point is here everyone should choose a profession according to his/her desires and needs don’t go for such a profession which will spoil their abilities.

Unfortunately in our society, the person who cannot speak English very well is considered as an educated person and the person who cannot speak English very well is considered as an uneducated person even having PhD degree. This is the reason why everyone wants to learn English and prefer most of the students despite having no interest in English chose MA English or other degrees in English.

There are a lot of misconceptions about MA English, people think after doing masters in linguistics they will be able to speak English fluently so it is not like that. Speaking need practice. Most students got disappointed when they have to English grammatical rules as they have no interest in it.

Another misconception is that people think a degree in English will open a lot of job opportunities for them, it’s not like that job require knowledge, abilities, potential, and most importantly your grip on your specific subject. If you can speak English fluently but having no other qualities then there is almost zero job opportunity for you even you have done your PhD in English literature and linguistics.

As Urdu is the national language of Pakistan and most of the Pakistani people are more comfortable with learning new things in this language, they can grab new things more easily in the Urdu language. If you are among such people who are more comfortable with Urdu rather than English I will suggest you acquire your degree in Urdu don’t go for English.

Learning is more important than just knowing.
