Thoughts on God

Yesterday while having a casual chat with my friend, I stumbled upon a sacrilegious topic on God. Though I gave her something digestible, I felt as if I’ve committed blasphemy by even popping up the topic. After all, how can we question God? And so I prayed for forgiveness. But some late night thoughts popped up in my mind about some of God’s skill-set that will make even you think about Him.

1. Can God sin?

If He’s omnipotent (all powerful), it would seem He can, because He can do anything. But if He’s also omnibenevolent (inherently good), then it would seem that He can’t. Also, as per our popular beliefs, God is divinely impeccable (he can’t sin). But if God is impeccable and incapable of sin, then does that mean that He is not omnipotent? After all I can sin… Easily. Just gimme 5 mins and I can probably break 2 or 3 commandments (Not the murdery ones though). So it seems kinda weird that I can do something that God can’t. Isn’t this awesome? 😅

2. Is Free Will truly free?

Most of us sense that we are free, we feel free, and we make all kind of decisions that lead to both beliefs and actions that are whole of our own choosing. But how can we be free if the Omni-God already knows what we are gonna do? Are we really free or is freedom just an illusion that he created for us, to make us feel like we are in control? If God knew I was gonna watch Netflix by myself over the course of a lonely weekend, and then exercising my power of free will I decided not to at the very last moment, won’t I just prove God wrong thereby single-handedly stripping him of his divine omniscience? That’s really perplexing. So believe it or not there is no escaping fate… Or is it? 😉

3. Does God respond to our prayers?

When people talk about praying for something to happen, or to not happen, or are otherwise making a request to god in the form of petitionary prayers, we have no reason to think that asking God for something would actually make a difference. If God is omniscient, omnipotent, and omnibenevolent, then God has already decided what’s going to happen in every single case… to everyone… Always. So either your prayer is asking God to do something he was already going to do, or your prayer is asking God to do something he has already decided not to do because it wasn’t actually the best thing. So in every case, your prayer was kind of a waste of time. 😋
