On the 24th of May SpareBank1 hosted a very interesting Design System Power lunch. The power lunch stated as an initiative from different developers and designers in the FinTech industry so we can share our experiences developing for the finical web.

The power lunch consisted of many quick talks about how different companies dealt with the challenges we face today as developers and designers. How to re-use components to stop re-inventing the wheel. Sergio from NAV told us about the open source NAV Designsystem and how NAV goes from planning a new component, to the component going into production as a new feature.

Designers and developers at SpareBank1 also told us about the process and challenges they met when they open sourced their entire front-end component library. Their design system is now on GitHub and already in use by OMS on SpareBank1 Markets’ online trading platform. Go open source!

OMS contributed to the talks as well. Our own front-end lead Espen Henriksen took to the stage and talked about our own OMS’ component library.

The OMS component library differs from many of the other libraries since we cannot re-use the design across all our customers. Different customers need different branding for their components, so that needs to be taken into account. However, a lot of the underlying data is the same, so there is a case for standardizing the components, and that is what the talk was about.

The lunch was a big success and inspired us a lot. Thanks to SpareBank1 for organizing it! We are now considering open sourcing our new webpage so we can show the world how OMS code style is. We hope to see many more power lunches if the future, especially from some of the bigger companies out there, such as FINN or NAV.
