This time we talked to Nadine, Co-Founder at Klima.Metrix. Klima.Metrix is a Berlin-based climatech company which uses its algorithms to calculate climate data for companies and their products.

______________________________________________Why is CO2e accounting such an important and necessary part of the process to become more sustainable?
Companies and decision-makers simply cannot manage what they do not measure. Old management wisdom. Therefore, carbon accounting is as essential as financial accounting to achieve global targets like the ones of the Paris Agreement. If companies that do not know exactly what their emissions in the different areas of the company are they tend to carry out reduction activities that are of little impact. E.g. climate-neutral business cards. Because you hold them in your hand every day. Not because they have a particularly large impact.
______________________________________________How can climate risks become business risks and how can companies raise awareness of their carbon footprint within their organization?
Climate risks are already business risks. Every company in the world is and will be more or less affected by climate risks. There are two types of climate risks, transition risks, and physical risks.
Transition risks resulting from regulatory-, legal-, reputation-, technology-, market- and financing risks. Physical risks are acute or chronic weather events that damage physical goods and impacts supply chains. Depending on the scenario of climate change, e.g. business as usual scenario, businesses will be impacted by climate change or the aggressive mitigation scenario will impact businesses by policy changes. And these changes will come faster then some will expect. Or as Ursula von der Leyen said: “Carbon emissions must have a price. Every person and every sector will have to contribute.”
