Read it. Perfect it.

First impressions can be easily overlooked, but can have a huge effect on your life, especially in situations such as job interviews and first dates. First impressions immediately make the observer biased in their proceeding thoughts about you. For example, if they receive a poor first impression, they will subconsciously seek other faults and reasons to dismiss you. The same rule applies the other way: if they receive a good first impression they will look for further positives. Read the following simple tips below to find out how you can improve, or what you already have nailed down.

  1. Have a strong handshake.

A seemingly obvious one, but spending a little time thinking about it will go far.

  • Keep your fingers together and thumb up and open, to allow for your ‘web’ of skin to make contact with theirs.
  • Don’t grip too quickly, allow your hand to fit as it should. There is nothing worse than crushing someones fingers.
  • Make eye contact. Probably the area in which most people could do with a little practice. It shows them they have your full attention and interest, while also helping you stand with a better posture as your eyes are not pointing down.
  • Make it firm, but not too firm. An area to be judged according to the recipient’s age, size and build. Definitely never give them a wet fish.

2. Be aware of contemporary issues.

It’s happened to everyone. Someone asks your views on an issue or event, but you’re only vaguely sure what they’re talking about. You have two options: truthfully accept your ignorance or attempt to blag your way past it, probably digging yourself into a larger hole. The best solution is to clue up, and we have some tips to help you…

  • Subscribe to a quality news magazine. The Week is a brilliant, low cost magazine that summarises the top stories of the week and categorises them for you. It’s very quick to read and is well written, too. It can be read online or as a magazine delivered to your door.
  • Have a browser like Yahoo as a web homepage. Again, they deliver the news at a glance and is free too.
  • Pick up a newspaper on the train. They’re always lying around, and even a ten minute journey is enough for a skim read.

3. Know your language.

Poor grammar and spelling mistakes can make you come across as lazy and uncaring. Proofread important emails you send. Also be aware of slang language as something you don’t want to see in a first email exchange. Social media has lowered our expectation, so be aware of this and how it could effect your style.

We hope we have given a good first impression. Now you go out and give yours!
