A Shaw University student is someone who comes to college with a mindset of having a purpose in life. Not only are there fun times in college, but there are also hard times. Going to college is an escape from nagging parents and grandparents. Being in college gives you a more in look into why going to college is a must; college gives you a purpose to do something with your life.

My purpose is to help others that help me. My mother made sure I did my homework every night and made sure I study for test the night before. She gave me the mindset of being self-motivated and to do anything as longs as I put effort into. She made sure I made it to school every day on time; with turning my work within the time required with no exceptions. My mom also made sure I walk across the stage to receive my diploma. One day when I finish pursuing my career I’m going to make sure I can help her as much as I can. Now instead of having my mother there with me in college I have a supporting faculty and other people in the classroom setting.

The classroom setting is somewhere people learn; but it can also be fun. You learn material through fun activities. You not only learn from them but also have much fun with them. The professors help you in any way possible; they make sure you get all the information you need to know. The professors I have now are will to go the extra mile to help make sure you pass their course with clear understanding; they have a determination to give you all the help and attention you need. The classrooms are filled with helpful students and professors.

Shaw University is filled with a lot of helpful resources. They have the counseling center, financial support building, and the student success center. The student success center also known as the writing center is a place where you can receive a lot of academic help. They help with any problems you have dealing with homework, classwork, projects, and etc. They help with all kinds of subjects including Math, English, and Science. You can have a problem in the area of math in regards to answering one math problem and they will be there to help. All you have to do is either schedule an appointment or just walk-in and they are willing to service you. There are some really nice people who take time out of their day and care for your needs.

The café food is very interesting and it is like the food back home. Some days the food is

the best and some days it’s the worst. With that being said you have to be prepared to bring food from home. The last time to eat at the café is 5 pm if you want to get a good selection of food; however most people like me have a high metabolism which means I eat all the time and bringing food from home comes in handy. Sometimes you may have a busy schedule and can’t get to the café so your food you bring can make a lot differences in a day’s time. Coming to college you are open to all different kinds’ foods which provide a variety; but it may take time for you to ingest it all.

Moving from a small city to a big city is a huge move. Shaw university is located right downtown of Raleigh. Raleigh being the state capital and being a big city you get the opportunity to many fun city events. Where I’m from we barely have city events. Down here in Raleigh you see many events almost every day. It is open to various beautiful restaurants, gift shops, and fun festivities. One event I attended was the barbecue fest and really enjoyed it plus it was only took a few dollars to get in. The whole street was filled with nothing but different barbecue. There were so many people showing off how their barbecue ribs or chicken is better than others. They had their sections set up with their prices and trophies. Some people had more than 100 trophies. The smell of sweet barbecue filled the streets. You can even smell it here on the campus. The festivities gives us the students something to do besides being in the room bored all day.

Going to the different sports games are very fun and exciting and it gives us something to do especially going to the first football game. You get the experience of watching Shaw U play against other colleges including revival colleges. It is fun to see our Shaw football players get suited up and fill with energy when they are being called to go in. You can also enjoy the seeing the cheer leaders perform on the side and the encouraging parents. What’s very interesting is watching the band perform during half-time also along with the dancers and color guard. Making it to the first home game where you don’t have to pay to get in is really good.

When going to Shaw you make new friends either it’s with guys or girls. On move in day you get nervous of wondering will you make any news friends or will you fit in. Most people around here don’t mind starting a nice conversation with you. They are willing to form study groups and plan fun events or activities with you. You are welcome to many nice people who are your age group or older that form friendly relationships with you. Go Shaw U!
