Grass Roots Effort To Get Students Involved
How can we get the community more involved with the school? It is shame that we don’t have any exposure about ourselves other than here on campus. Just because we are a private college doesn’t mean we have to keep everything inside these gates. There is a new generation that has come to this university so we would like to have some exposure that comes from the outside to the inside. It’s not like it would kill the college if they just open up to the community a little bit. There is just not anything that is catching my eye here that is so amazing at this school. I mean we are here but no one cares about Shaw but the people who know about Shaw. We have nothing that really stands out at this school because no one comes to the football games we don’t really have any school spirit. I have thought about starting a group that goes out and talks to the community and telling them about Shaw to get some exposure because we don’t have anything that has something special about this college.
We are not just sitting here for nothing and that is not what we have been sitting here for 150 years for. We want to be better I mean this school could use a lot of work but the they need exposure more because there is a new generation that goes here and that is what we want to be out there and knowing that our school is not just here for students to come here and get an education. The only place you can buy Shaw paraphilia at the book store that is located on campus. What if someone’s family member wants to buy something that shows that they are proud of their child or grandchild or niece etc. So that means that the family member has to come all the way here to get something or order it online that is kind of stupid to me if you ask me. That quote from my favorite movie the secret life of bees is “it’s got its own spot in the world where the outside don’t come in”. Also there is another one that comes from the movie Beautiful Creatures that says “there is only two kinds of people in Gatlin the ones two stuck to move and the one ones too stupid to leave”.
There is just that I want this college to be home for me so I think I will have to put my touch on this school to make it feel like home a little bit. Even though it needs some work that is just a little struggle but I think that this group will get more help from the outside and we can get some improvements on something’s that could be better. That’s just what I want out of my college. I want to be proud to go here but if this is how they want to be represented then I can’t stay here. I want the college I attend to be a great place to come to school. Where there is a lot of school spirit from the school and the community and activities where students actually attend and some other extra circular activities .
Also my feelings about this whole situation are just that I think that we just need to get more involved in the community. That would make it better to have people to come to games not just the students. But people who live around here and they can come and show support for the school. That would give us some exposure to this community just because the school is in the black community that it has to be all bad we can as a school make it good for the community and for the school. But it will take one person to start it off then I think it would be group thing. But that is the point that I am trying to make that it will just make it like we are trying to do something good for the community and to give Shaw a name another then the ghetto hood school full of black adults that fight.
That is all I would really like to form a group that is willing to go out in the community and get more involved with what is going on in the community and try to get people to come to some of our events like games and other activities and that way it will be a good thing for the school to be more involved in the community as a whole to let those people know that we go to Shaw and we care what is going in our community. Even though we are in the middle of downtown that will be a great place to start get involved in. They probably have so many things that we can do to help our school and the community that we are sitting right in that is going to be a start. The only we can do is try but there is one thing that I don’t do when things get hard is give up. Giving up is the last thing that I will do but everything is possible with just some hard work and people willing to help out at any cost.
