Are you feeling a bit lost in the world of tech? Do you want to divert into tech but don’t know which field to go into? It is ok to be confused but it is not ok to stay confused. First things First, why do you want to dive into tech, let me guess, you heard that tech money is sweet 😄 or that Tech is the new oil? Whatever your reason may be, get ready to work harder — not just hard. So sit back, and get ready to dive into the wild and wonderful world of tech.

In this article, I will discuss some aspects you can consider based on your interests and what you might need to choose an area. These include :

  1. Cyber Security — when you hear the word cyber what comes to your mind? I hope it’s not cybercrime. Cyber security is the practice of defending computers, servers, and electronic systems in general from attacks or unauthorized access. You must have an understanding of hacking, critical thinking, how networks work and programming because you’ll be protecting networks and servers.
  2. Web Development — short for website development. There is the Frontend web development and backend web development. The first is concerned with the outlook of the website, what people see and so a front-end web developer must understand how to use and choose good colours, images and texts while the latter is concerned with the operation of the website and what the website will do.
  3. Project Management — involves using tools to help an individual or team manage and track the progress of a project. Basecamp, Jira, LiquidPlanner, and Trello are very good tools to start with.
  4. Data Science — Do you love mathematics and statistics, Graphs charts, working with numbers and creating meaning out of them? Data Science is probably for you. Read my article on how to kickstart your Data Science Journey here for more details.
  5. Data Analysis — Data Analysis is similar to Data Science but quite different in terms of Machine Learning. However, it is easier to become a data scientist if you are a Data Analyst. Most of the tools used are drag and drop kind of tools like Tableau and Microsoft Power BI.
  6. Product Management — A product manager plans and executes the product’s lifecycle. The stages involved are; Product discovery, product planning and product development while working closely with sales representatives and engineers in other to satisfy customers and improve on a product. Interesting!
  7. Technical Writing — Most technical writing involves working on complex technical projects and breaking them down in writing. Technical writers are responsible for writing documentation. Read this.
  8. User Interface and User Experience (UI/UX) design — User interface/ User Experience design. The UI deals with the interaction with the applications of a system while the UX is the general experience while using the product. A common example by mastersindatascience, a team of data scientists, is that of a restaurant. The UI is the plates, spoons and napkins while the UX is the lighting, music, and so on. Figma and Adobe XD are every UI/UX designer’s magic tools.
  9. Graphics Design — once upon a time I was learning graphics and I was told that every design must have three(3) things, text, image and colour. All these make up a good design. To be a good graphics designer, learn how to combine colours and be creative. I discovered that the main tools of a graphics designer are Photoshop, Illustrator and Sketch, too
  10. Software Sales Representative — A software sales rep facilitates the sale of software and provides technical support by answering clients before and after purchase – answering phone calls until every client is satisfied. More like customer care but more than that.
  11. Mobile App Development — Developing mobile applications for mobile phones either Android or iOS. This involves knowledge of programming languages like Java, kotlin, python, C++ with and. frameworks like Flutter and Firebase.
  12. Desktop Developer — Builds software applications and server Operating systems, like MacOS, and Windows. Most times software designed for desktops have their mobile applications too because Android and Windows for instance are different operating systems.
  13. Animation — Giving life to inanimate objects. Most animators use Blender, Unity, Adobe after effects etc. If you like anime, maybe, just maybe Animation is for you.
  14. Research Assistant — a research assistant prepares interview questions, literature reviews, respond to emails, monitors the milestone in a project and so on. Yes, you can be a research assistant for a tech company or lecturer in your field.
  15. Game Development — Developing or building a game from scratch. Every game is birthed from an idea that was conceived. Brainstorming, information gathering, building and refining are part of the game development process. Game development also involves learning mathematical concepts, programming as well as creative thinking.
  16. QA Test Engineer — QA means Quality Assurance, A Quality Assurance Engineer creates tests that estsentify issues with software before launching it. Whether it is a website or a mobile application or a Desktop application it needs to be tested and trusted before launch.

Conclusion

These are not all available aspects of tech that exist out there but I have limited it to sixteen (16) in this article. Feel free to ask questions in the comment section below.
