ALBANY, N.Y. (April 17, 2017) — — Albany Mayor Kathy M. Sheehan has officially endorsed former Albany Common Councilmember Corey Ellis as the next Common Council President.

Ellis, who also vied for the Democratic nomination for Mayor in 2013, also endorsed Sheehan, saying “(Mayor Sheehan) deserves a second term to continue to bring Albany to new heights.”

“I am thrilled to support our next Common Council President, Corey Ellis. Our support for one another demonstrates what civility in politics looks like. We both love our city and there is nothing we won’t do to ensure the residents they have the services and resources they need within City Hall and beyond,” said Mayor Sheehan.

“Over the past four years, I’ve watched Mayor Sheehan roll up her sleeves and put our city on the right course. Mayor Sheehan has shown her commitment to revitalizing all of our neighborhoods. Kathy has been all over the community and knows the importance of equitable resources. When we re-elect Kathy Sheehan, I look forward to working with her to bring our city to new heights. I thank Mayor Sheehan for her endorsement of my candidacy and I’m proud to endorse her for re-election for a second term,” said Ellis.

A native of Albany, Ellis graduated from Bishop Maginn High School and Fordham University. In 2004, he served as political director for Albany County District Attorney David Soares’ first campaign. The following year, Ellis was elected to the Albany Common Council for the third ward. Four years later in 2009, Ellis challenged then-Albany Mayor Gerald D. Jennings in the Democratic primary, narrowly losing in what was Jennings’ closest challenge since his first race in 1993.

Ellis is now a board member for the Albany County Land Bank, in addition to serving as president of the Capital District Black Chamber of Commerce, which he co-founded to address the socio-economic void that exists for black business owners in the Capital Region. Ellis was elected as a member of the New York State Democratic Committee representing the 108th Assembly District and the first African-American to do so.
