MVPing features with Intercom

Fake features, talk with customers, move fast.

We rely heavily on the Intercom. We use it as the live chat on our page, for all kind of users. It’s also our tool of choice for all transactional emails.

High speed in small team

We catch the momentum and get into a high-speed delivery cycle. We deploy every day, so our app is constantly changing. Every week we send an email with updates — what we’ve changed in Sheetsu or what new feature or product we have added.

We are a small team of 5 people. We need to be smart about what to develop and what to fake (aka develop later if needed).

How we roll

Last week we added Sheetsu Pages. It’s the easiest way of hosting files. Drop files onto your Google Drive. Click sync button on Sheetsu’s dashboard, and it’s done. Your files are live on Amazon’s S3.

UI with main feature working and rest of them being messages to us on Intercom

To get into the fast delivery mode, we need to cut out most of the features. We MVP only the core of the feature/product and plug the rest. Here comes Intercom to the rescue.

We build UI ready with all the links, buttons and features we think might be useful. But when you click it we open an Intercom message window with a pre-populated message.

Message we get after clicking on the ‘not ready yet’ feature

This way we know if there’s a need to add feature or not. It’s a good starting point for a conversation about the product/feature.

Build & test at the same time

After the user sends us the message, we start a conversation. At the end of the week, we see how many of such messages we recived. We don’t need to check it anywhere because we talk about all the awesome conversations we have with our customers. This way we know if we should put effort into delivering it.

From our perspective, it’s shaving us dozens of hours from our backlog of work. Instead of writing code, we put something like:

Code we are using to fake feature with Intercom chat

Because of that, we are blazingly fast with delivering a product that people love. This is the most important thing of our job.

The best part is sending the “We did for you, champ!” message after we deliver the feature.

What is Sheetsu?

Sheetsu lets you create backend out of Google Spreadsheets and implement it on your website through HTML. That means faster delivery and access to your data through Google Spreadsheets.
