This is Jinny Wong! She is the Chief Technical Officer at watchovermeapp.com and she builds cool iOS apps at Xseed Solutions.

She’s one of the few female CTOs on the startup scene in Kuala Lumpur. She will be speaking at the next meet-up — SheSays KL: Women in Tech — where we will be discussing what it takes to build a meaningful product, the role developers play in building a startup’s dream team and how she approaches problem solving in her technical role.

With over a decade of experience working on development, we can’t wait to learn from her insight on what makes a successful build. Below she shares some of her biggest learnings and what inspires her. Here’s what she has to say…

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt over the last year?

Not to panic or despair when life gets you down. In the past year I had experienced some very low lows in both work and personal life, and panicking or giving up just means that you will not crawl out of that low moment. You will sometimes be surprised at how willing people are to help pick you up and pull you up, and support you until you have your own two feet on the ground again.

What’s your burning question of the moment?

I’m most curious right now on how to cultivate what I’d like to term “continuous inspiration” — continuously being inspired and coming up with new ideas or better ways to improve our product, not just within myself but also my team. I believe that people work best when they dream up of an idea themselves, even if the idea is not for a completely brand new app or product, but a better way of doing X or Y for our existing stuff.

What’s the most inspiring thing you’ve seen/heard/read in the last year?

In the last year I spent quite a bit of time seeing and listening to my friend’s story, which is quite incredible — he is disabled, and his disability has affected his livelihood, and he lost nearly everything he has worked so hard for all these while. But in spite of all this, he puts on the biggest smile, and says, “I have a plan already. I’m not worried. I will rebuild the business and come back stronger”.
