Over 80% of students believe that digital learning technology is vital to the future of education

In 2015, more than 18.6 million students studied in U.S. higher education institutions. And it’s no secret that, even when it’s not provided or mandated by educators, students will use devices in class. By 2015, ownership levels among students were 88% for laptops, 85% for smartphones and 52% for tablets. Two years earlier, 72% owned smartphones and just 38% had tablets. Now more than ever, students are dependent on their own technology to support their studies and digital tools are becoming more and more popular in higher education. But who is helping to ensure that the tech they use is both relevant to their education and seamlessly integrated into instruction? How do digital courseware and learning materials factor into the equation?

This fall, we decided to do a little digging, and launched a survey to better understand student attitudes towards digital course materials and courseware. What we found was surprising. Over 80% believe that digital learning technology is vital to the future of education…but the number of students using digital course materials and courseware in their courses told a different story.
