Design Studio and Maker Space

Arduino Workshop with guest facilitator Ankit Dialani

We hosted a beginners workshop to provide gist of coding/Arduino Programming+ robotics +electronics. Basic activities were writing codes, blinking LEDs, understanding the programming structure of Arduino and how to use bread board to control multiple LEDs. Krishna (8th class) and Abhishek (7th class) were doing really well. We could see a sense of self realization in them. They asked for help from friends and facilitators whenever required.

In this month in the Repair Café, students repaired bluetooth headphones, old electrical boards and speakers.

As a part of their upcycling projects, Krishna (7th class), Abhishek (7th class), Adarsh (8th class) designed furniture from old tyres for Dariya Dil Cafe.

Slowfood Junior Chefs Academy

Our guest facilitator, Sanyukta didi, hosted a workshop with the kids dedicated to celebrating Indian food heritage. Sanyukta is a lawyer who is passionate about cooking. One sweet and one savory dish was made from a different state on each of the days. We made Panjiri, a sweet made out of whole-wheat and pearl millet and spices to stay warm during the harsh winters of North India. Patishapta and Moong Dal Petha are the dishes made during Makar Sankranti in West Bengal to celebrate the harvest of the season. Patishapta mainly consists of freshly harvested rice, jaggery and coconut.

Gulshan (8th class) and Faisal (9th class) were excited to make puran poli. Puran poli is from the state of Maharashtra. It is made as part of celebration during Gudi Padwa. Dev (7th class) and Neeraj (6th class) made vada pao, also a dish from Maharashtra. While all were enthusiastic,
Gulshan displayed a strong sense of ownership till the very end.

We made Double ka Meetha from the city Hyderabad. Double ka Meetha is a dish made up of fried left over bread, locally known as Double Roti due to its leavening properties topped with thickened milk, nuts and spices. Lukhmi is the local Hyderabadi variant of North Indian cousin samosa.

While crispy and flaky on the outside, traditionally it consists of minced meat filling inside. The recipe has been suitably adapted to consist of vegetarian filling made up of potatoes and cottage cheese. Gulshan prepared the cottage cheese out of milk and mashed potatoes along with Krishna (9th class). They kneaded the dough. They were joined by the other children in stuffing the pastries. The workshop was a great learning experience for the students. They learned to modify recipes as per need and find substitute for the missing ingredients as well. The children were inquisitive to learn about the origin of all the dishes made.

Dance, Music and Art Academy

We hosted a special dance workshop with guest facilitator and fitness therapist, Sonu didi, where our students learned the basics of Aerobic and Zumba. It was designed to develop socio emotional health, sensitise students to social and gender issues and explore sustainable sources of livelihood with dance.

The Changemakers senior dance group choreographed and shot a new dance video on a Bollywood song named Satya. They experimented with shadow dancing.

The dance hub students also choreographed a dance on the issue of suicide. Prior to practicing and shooting the dance, they had some very powerful conversations about their experiences and thoughts on suicide. This was a very important topic since many students around the country get very stressed during March-April every year from exam pressure and contemplate suicide.

Music Hub

In this month, our musicians were working on their new music video and prepared for upcoming show performances. They did daily riyaaz (music practice), of Alankars, Raag Bhopali, Aaroh and Avroh and Sargam Geet.

The Music team also started to learn how to use the new music recording equipment and software in the Creativity Adda Music Studio. They are excited to record and release some new songs.

Sports and Fitness Hub

We hosted a table tennis workshop with guest facilitator, Darpan Majumdar. Students learned some new techniques and tricks such as how to hold a table tennis racket for different shots, how and where to stand - one has to bend from the knees so one can come under the ball and where to stand from the table as this gives a sense of where they need to stand for placing the ball and their own pivot — and how to smash the ball when the ball is reaching heights. The students had a lot of fun with Darpan bhaiya and invite you to come play some TT with them.
