There’s a lot of hype around Artificial Intelligence (AI) — it’s like the Taylor Swift of the NFL. With countless articles, blogs, videos, and other content produced about AI, what makes this one any different?

Simple. We’re going to explain the real-world ways you can apply AI in the context of shipping and maritime. Let’s get started:

What are the three ways we can use AI?

  1. Copilots: Think of a copilot as a tool for turbocharging your existing employees. For example, a chatbot that answers questions about vessel requirements entering particular ports or berths.
  2. Agents: This type of AI takes care of the work end-to-end. Imagine a chatbot that hears VHF radio calls and then sends emails or text messages to the appropriate parties.
  3. Services: A service is where a company completely outsources work to an AI-first company. Instead of having a demurrage department, you could submit your claims, SOFs, and CP terms to an AI application that returns a recommendation.

Think of AI in terms of shipping terms we already know

  • Copilot: This is like a pilot coming on your ship to help guide you. They are the local expert, but it’s still your ship and ultimately your decision on what to do.
  • Agents: When a vessel comes into port, they give the agent certain permissions to act on their behalf. AI can serve the same function.
  • Services: Whether it’s crewing or technical management, many aspects of shipping are already outsourced. Instead of outsourcing tasks to a company providing manual services, AI can be used to perform tasks on your behalf.

When you run into problems, chances are you think of solving them by 1) getting advice, 2) needing to complete some tasks, or 3) finding someone to own the problem entirely. This is where the three applications of AI in shipping come into play. The solution must fit the problem. So, instead of thinking of AI as one big bucket of ChatGPT-like functionality, think in terms of Copilots, Agents, and Services.
