The color of the leaves aren’t turning, a cool breeze hasn’t picked up, but autumn is here! Last Tuesday, a handful of people interviewed around the Cronkite School of Journalism campus in Downtown Phoenix agreed that they can’t tell the season has changed.

The interviews brought to attention that people of Arizona don’t feel the change of season from the air. They feel it through advertisements, events, merchandise, and food.

Pumpkin Spice Latte maker at Starbucks, Destiny Corletto, from California has the tradition of going to Disneyland during fall. She prefers to go around October because it’s “spooky season”. Corletto misses the sweater weather that California holds, however, she does like that she can still go to the pumpkin patches here in the desert.

“Arizona doesn’t have four seasons. You never get used to the summers, you don’t acclimatize, you just put up with it”, said Don Veitch from England. Veitch likes the winters in Phoenix because they’re “moderate”. He still holds positive feelings toward fall because of his memories in England. Veitch recalled the days when it would start to get cooler after summer as a nice time.

Others have a solution to the triple-digit fall weather in Phoenix. Colin Larry, who is a chef at the Taylor Place (an Arizona State dormitory) cafeteria said, “if you drive just two and a half hours north, you get the whole bright orange, the red, the full autumn feel.” While Larry, from Flagstaff, Arizona, doesn’t get those colors in Phoenix, he appreciates fall in other ways, specifically, for the longer nights.

After sampling people of Phoenix, it has been made clear that there is more to a season than just the weather. You can’t forget the traditions, memories, and feelings that come at a certain time of year.
