The eye-catching “Bloomcanopy” made its debut in Downtown Phoenix July 2017, in the midst of the scorching summer heat.

As September comes to a close in Phoenix, Arizona, its residents are still trying to find ways to stay cool. Temperatures are still in the 90’s, and shade is in high demand.

Though the desert plant life is what makes the valley of the sun a unique destination, it does little to increase the city’s walkability.

The city is now increasing their efforts to provide shade by constructing art installations. They’re hoping to attract visitors to the sidewalks of Downtown Phoenix by combining trees and structures.

One of the recent installations could be spotted just outside of the Phoenix Public Market Cafe on Pierce St. between Central Ave. and 1st St. The eye-catching “Bloomcanopy” debuted in July of 2017, in the midst of the scorching summer heat.

Designed by NY-based company Matter Architecture Practice and the landscape architects of Gavan & Barker, Inc., the installation was part of a larger project meant to improve Pierce St. The City of Phoenix added new trees, landscaping, and a series of shade-structures.

The City of Phoenix hopes the new colorful installation will attract art connoiseurs.
