The Sun Devils is the name of the Football Team from Arizona State University (ASU). The Sun Devils’ mascot, Sparky — a burgundy devil holding a trident — was created by former Disney illustrator, Bert Anthony. The team, however, was not always known by this name. Previously ASU’s football squad was called the Bulldogs. This was changed in 1946 when the the student body voted 819 to 196 to adopt the new name and mascot. With the help of the Walt Disney Company, Sparky was born. Former Walt Disney and ASU alumnus Bert Anthony created the playful, devilish and mischievous symbol of ASU’s sport team. The gold-face devil in burgundy holding a gold trident with goatee and Clark Gable moustache. The two colors represent the weather and the desert in Arizona state.
