Do you remember the late nights when you wanted to have supper but are too comfortable in your home to move? Or perhaps the times at work when you and your colleagues wanted to savour a snack from a faraway bakery? We certainly do. If we had to count our blessings, one of them would definitely include the omnipresence of food delivery services, as it has allowed us to relish in our favourite foods from the tap of a button.

Here at the Shopee Design team, designing the new ShopeeFood feature has undoubtedly given us a chance to fuse our passion for design and food into our work. With its recent launch, we decided to explore how much food delivery services mean to us and users alike. As vaccinations start to keep the pandemic at bay, will the hype around food delivery services simply vanish? Here’s our take: No, it won’t and here are three reasons why we believe so.

1. Food Delivery Services Boost Our Productivity Pre and Post-Pandemic

Even before the pandemic, some of us probably remember the times we made use of food delivery services to get our meals when we are rushing to meet deadlines.

Food delivery services free up time that was once used to travel for food. With this extra time, we can spend it on other aspects of our lives, such as work, personal pursuits or even a break. Naturally, most of us want to maximise our time, and this habit is unlikely to change even after the pandemic subsides.

Not to mention, as competition in the food delivery sector increases, aggressive promotions have become more common. Therefore, food delivery services have also become more affordable over time. We foresee that the incentive to use food delivery services will increase further as people can save more time with lesser costs incurred!

2. New Opportunities for Professional Development Due to Projected Growth of the Food Delivery Industry Even Post-pandemic

Since we have seen how food delivery services will remain relevant from a consumer’s perspective, let us explore this from a professional standpoint.

Given how food delivery services will remain in demand and have lots of room for development, they open up many career opportunities for professionals. For instance, here at Shopee Design, we have the chance to combine our love for design and food to design ShopeeFood, Sea Group’s food delivery service based in Indonesia.

Not only that, but such opportunities also allow us to learn from one another as we expose ourselves to different design experiences and trains of thought. We also constantly explore new ways to improve shopping experiences on ShopeeFood through research and technological advancements. The pandemic has also empowered us as we discover new ways to collaborate more efficiently and such patterns are here to stay.

Given that the demand for food delivery services is projected to increase and the industry is still in its infancy, we believe that there will be an abundance of opportunities to enhance professional development as we work to improve ShopeeFood even post-pandemic.

3. Food Delivery Services Cater to Consumers’ Need For Accessibility and Variety

Even before the pandemic, many restaurants have already listed themselves on food delivery services since they know users generally have a voracious appetite for a wide variety of foods. Food delivery services have allowed us to find our next meal based on our preferences readily and this is especially true for users with dietary preferences. Being able to filter and search for foods specific to their dietary needs makes such food so much more available through food delivery services.

With the influx of restaurants listings after the pandemic, food options are set to increase in variety and become more accessible. For instance, ShopeeFood constantly has merchants that sell a vast array of foods to cater to their users.

To end off, we believe food delivery services to be one of the miracles in the realm of technology and design. The pandemic has simply highlighted the intertwined relationship we have always had with food delivery services, regardless of whether we use them or work on their operations. We are excited to witness how far technology and design can go hand in hand at Shopee!
