Today we’re going to discuss a simple website integration that allows you to better identify your website’s visitors. With this tool we can learn more about who visits pages to simply browse and who makes the leap to purchase products; all information that helps tailor your message to the right type of buyer.

This tool is called the Facebook Pixel.

What is the pixel & how does it work?

Say a customer visits your store, adds a few products to the cart and checks out. Congrats, you’ve just gained a new customer…but who were they? You may have their email, name, and address but why did they visit and how can you find more individuals like them?

Determining the answers to these questions seems to be an exhausting, daunting task. It would require asking them what they were looking for, what other sites they visited before selecting yours, and on. You would then build a profile for that type of consumer and re-target individuals like them.

Or, you could use the Facebook Pixel…

What does it do?

This pixel acts like a door bell online, signaling to Facebook that someone has visited a site or specific page on a site. So when a web surfer goes bouncing from site to site, they trigger various Facebook Pixels installed on other business’s websites. Facebook accumulates this data and uses it to build profiles for their advertising platform. You can then use the data Facebook has gathered from your pixel to target individuals similar to them. Essentially, your own customized Audience.

How to install it.

Step 1. Facebook Business Account

First you’ll need to convert your business’s Facebook page into a business account. This allows you to create and manage ads, in addition to installing the pixel.

You can do that here: https://business.facebook.com/

Step 2. Installing the Pixel

This step is easier to understand with visuals so I’ve included a video below.

How do you use it?

Once you’ve added your pixel, you’ll need to leave it alone for a few days or weeks; depending on how busy your site is with traffic. During that time it will learn who is visiting and what other pixels they’ve triggered. The info that’s gathered is broad such as “likes hiking and camping gear” and does not reveal more personal info like name, email, and phone.

Now you can create an ad. When prompted to choose your Audience, you can select instead which pixel from your site you’d like to use. These could be from various sections — people who have added a product to the cart, checked out, or simply visited a page. This is beneficial as it saves you copious time and money testing out ads on various consumer types.

While the pixel is a great tool, Facebook hasn’t been the most trustworthy in recent times. The amount of data they have is vast and they need to be held accountable for the security of their users information. If your goal is to provide relevant products and better service to someone who’s looking, then great. This will help you do that. We hope it provides you with helpful insights into how to better serve and target your customers.
