United Bans 21 Dog Breeds For Flying Just Before SuperZoo — What You Need To Know

Effective June 18, United will ban 21 dog breeds and 4 cat breeds for flight this summer season in an update to their transportation program called PetSafe — specifically for pets not eligible to travel in the aircraft cabin. These breeds include any brachycephalic (or short or snub-nosed) dogs and cats out of concern for higher adverse health risks from heat or stress. A full list of breeds is provided below.

Additionally, from May 1st — Sept. 30th there will be no pet transport reservations allowed to and from the following cities due to high temperature risks.

• Las Vegas (LAS) — SuperZoo
• Palm Springs (PSP)
• Phoenix (PHX)
• Tucson (TUS)

If you have booked a United flight to SuperZoo this year and will be bringing a pet, it may be best to contact PetSafe and/or United to ensure a smooth trip.

So why the new policy?

This change in policy is a result of the March 12th incident where a french bulldog perished in an overhead compartment. This is only supplementary when you consider that in 2017 alone, they had accounted for 18 out of the 24 pet deaths reported on airlines. Following the incidents, United has partnered with American Humane to further ensure the safety of animals aboard flights.
