The Instacart Checkout

We want to help you earn more tips by simplifying the process of tipping for customers on our platform.

After talking with many customers and shoppers, we’re excited to unveil a new version of the way tips and service fees work. This experience makes tipping easier and simplifies the service fee.

What are the changes?

Starting on April 24th, we will be suggesting a default tip of 5% on every order. As always, customers can choose to modify this amount during checkout or up to 3 days after the order is complete.

Secondly, customers will pay a 5% service fee to Instacart instead of the 10% fee they see today. This amount is no longer waivable by customers.

We hope that these changes help you earn more tips and simplify the checkout process for customers. Here’s what the checkout screens look like:

Why did we make these changes?

At Instacart, we consistently strive to do better. The changes are the result of hearing from many shoppers and customers. Shoppers told us they wanted it to be easier for customers to tip. Customers wanted to recognize the specific shopper who assisted with their order. We feel this restructured pricing and tip interface is better — for both shoppers and customers.

What does this mean for you?

We believe shoppers will benefit from the new default 5% tip. While tipping is always at the customer’s discretion, our user research indicates that more than 80% of customers will tip in this new structure, most commonly 5% or in some cases 10–15%. Suggesting a 5% default tip to the customer during checkout results in increased predictability of your earnings.
