4 Cheap Ways to Decorate Your Walls

Let’s face it — very few of us are able to afford to have our favorite artwork custom framed, and even if we could, you need to own a property before you go nailing mounts into the walls all willy-nilly. If you’re poor and live in a rental, these four cheap workarounds will help you make your living space a bit more you without costing an arm and a leg — or a security deposit.

Tetris Tableau

One picture on an otherwise blank wall can look fairly grim, but when you group a bunch of your favorite images together, even if they’re not framed, it tricks the eye into looking like one dynamic piece of art. Tap into your Tetris skills and arrange your favorite photos, magazine clippings, postcards and letters in the center of a blank space on the wall with wall-safe mounting tape; keep about five inches of space between everything and don’t stray too far off in any one direction to give the illusion that your tableau is one uniform piece.

Multimedia Display

Textured decorations on your walls can add both depth and visual interest to an otherwise bleak design scheme. Hang a length of twine or two against a wall using wall-safe sticky hooks, and then use it to anchor pieces of art, dried flowers, and other pieces of 3D ephemera with alligator clips.

Art Shelf

Too often, our available shelves are designated for practical items like books, clothes and cosmetics. If you have an empty corner of your home that seems to suck all the joy out of the space, set up a thin shelf against the wall (or even an old wooden ladder) and use it exclusively for decorations of all shapes and sizes.

Cork Board

A cork board is a great (and cheap) way to get around a static decorating scheme. Set up a large cork board on top of a mantlepiece or fix it to an empty wall with several strips of wall-safe mounting tape for a backdrop to an ever-shifting variety of artwork, affirmations and 2D memorabilia that you don’t need to commit to.
