Prep Your Pots

Almost any plant that grows outside can also be grown indoors. Choose plants that thrive in well-draining soil, because these are often hardy growers that are able to adapt well to their environment. Pots of any size will work. Choose some smaller pots that fit on your windowsill or anywhere that gets a lot of natural sunlight.

Once you’ve selected your pots, fill the very bottom with a layer of rocks. This will give water somewhere to go after it drains through the soil. Fill the rest of the pot up with potting soil, leaving about two inches of space between the top of the soil and the top of the pot.

Start Planting

Grow your own edible microgreens by poking holes into the top of the soil, about 4 inches apart, using your fingers. Drop a few microgreen seeds into each hole, and soon you’ll have your own fresh greens. Harvest just the outer leaves when you want to eat. As long as the roots say intact, you’ll be able to keep eating fresh greens whenever you like.

Breathe Easy

If you want a plant to look at but not to eat, try pothos. This leafy plant purifies the air so well it actually cleans toxins right out of your breathable air. Pothos can grow stems as long as 8 feet, so prune your plant whenever it gets too long. Pothos grows well in just about all lighting conditions and doesn’t need to be watered often. It also thrives at room temperature, making it a perfect houseplant.

Need more home gardening ideas? Aloe, spider plants, rubber plant and jade plant are all very easy to grow and thrive in indoor environments. They do best at around 70 degrees, which is room temperature for most people.

Take Care

Check soil daily to see if your plants need water. If the soil feels dry to the touch, water it until it feels damp against your fingers. If the soil is already moist, don’t add more water because it’s not needed. Keep your plants healthy by cutting away any brown spots or dead leaves when they appear. If you spend a minute or two a day caring for your plants, they’ll thrive without any extra work on your part!

Grow Plants Indoors

Indoor plants reduce background noise, and generally make your home a more pleasant place to live. They can improve your mood, and they add natural beauty to any space. When it’s this simple to grow your own plants, why not give it a try and see how they might improve your home?
