Virtual worlds explore our vision of how to optimize 3D space

The world of spatial software has expanded with the release of Apple’s Vision Pro headset this year. Vision Pro has been publicly available since February 2, 2024, and since then there have already been a staggering number of intriguing demos showing what’s possible. Here I want to collect a number of the ones I find interesting then discuss implications and ideas for other use cases as spatial computing progresses.

The biggest difference with spatial computing compared to modern “2D” computing is the idea that computing happens “where ever you are at” vs “somewhere you go to”. This is a key difference in how we think about software because it changes the user experience significantly. Similar to how developers of products like an insulin pump need to account for the fact a user will be wearing the device throughout their daily life, means they need to think about how that device works in the world around other products and place the user will find themselves. Spatial computing opens up very similar problems for software products and applications. This is very different to “2D” software that lives “in a box”.
