No one will believe us. No one will believe you. No one will believe that he got this far. They will believe that he did, but they will not believe that he did, really. They will examine the jargon that blunted his conditions, the analogies and patterns that explained his tendencies, the footage, the hearings, the posts, set everything aside and say:

Yes but he was mad.

He was awful, deranged, dead through the guts. And so stupid! Jesus! You couldn’t hear his voice without feeling the very force which animates life start to fade. And yet you let him go this long? Name a worse person in the history of the country. One who’s induced more death, chaos and destruction! Just one!

He was mad. I don’t believe he went this long.

And we’ll grow frustrated not because they won’t believe what he did but because they won’t believe what we want them to believe about how he did it. We will want them to understand the sycophantic media, the checks that failed to even pretend to balance, or something deeper; here was a national sugar/caffeine/booze overdose, war and sport analogies finally came to life, the split between screen and reality disappeared, spirituality plus exceptionalism kills, his followers couldn’t ever be a little suspicious about the fact so many people were out to get him. That’s what we’ll want them to get.

Yes, but he was mad?
