We Can Sum Up Uncanny ’90s 3D Animation With One Film, Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins
ReBoot would like its insults back.
Mortal Kombat’s ingrained in pop culture, but it is a weird franchise. What is now a hyperrealistic fighter where everyone kills each other for the sake of violence, Mortal Kombat was a campy martial arts title where fantasy and kung-fu collide. There’s nothing more unusual than someone shooting ice and fireballs out of their hands.
To take it further, no protector of Earth would wear a straw hat and shoot lightning through his hands like the character from Big Trouble In Little China. Yet we view God as a Caucasian man with long white hair and a beard.
Regardless, Mortal Kombat’s ludicrousy is prime for a film or TV show. And Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins takes the cake.
Released in the same month as Mortal Kombat 1995, Threshold Entertainment created the Mortal Kombat animated feature no MK fan mentions. Hands down, Mortal Kombat’s 3D animation wins the award for poor design and uncanny presentation. ReBoot would like its insults back.
