Hi everybody!

Okay, a little housekeeping before diving back into the charts. You may notice that this week we’re on a new website! I’m dumb and didn’t understand how Medium worked until like two days ago, so I made a new “Publication” page for this stuff and also in the process of trying to make this site look nice or however nice you can make a Medium page, so bare with me the next few weeks as we adjust. Further digression, Medium also feels really unstable, so like where the fuck do you blog in 2017, please let me know. Anyway: this week features our first guest writer appearance, which is exciting to me, so let’s get into the charts this week!

  • Y’all should know the drill at this point, but since we’ve been doing these charts, “XO Tour Llif3” has held down the #1 spot for three of the four weeks. I don’t think that’ll be changing anytime soon, so at this point my only question is where the fuck is Luv Is Rage 2. Release The Tapes Atlantic, Release the Tapes.
  • One of the first songs I wanted to highlight this week is Atlanta rapper, YFN Lucci’s “Everyday We Lit,” which features current Atlantic Records superstar PnB Rock. Now, this song is ooooolllllddd. It came out late last year and when I was back in North Carolina I was already hearing it on the radio back in March, but the song’s right now is climbing up the Billboard Charts, currently peaked at #47, so makes sense it’s doing well on SoundCloud. That kind of radio first then streaming second life is what I wanted to highlight here: Radio still matters. Radio is clearly being influenced by streaming services, but this is a song that I heard on the radio not long after it was initially released and it is only now months later getting traction in the world of streaming. Even though the terminology is off, “street” records often have this life cycle, where they’ll be popular in clubs, “the streets,” and even radio before eventually making it streaming services. I say this not to undermine the value of streaming services — they have none, but just to note that there are more ecosystems beyond streaming and those ecosystems are still able to create and kill hits.
  • This is a little bit of a sidestep, but I wanted to say that Lil Pump, who still has three songs on charts was announced to have signed to Warner Bros. Daily Chiefers reported and included screenshots of Pump’s Spotify page that shows his music now bears the Warner Bros. tag. So, lil bro is def signed. This should be a pro tip, if you’re wondering if you’re favorite SoundCloud rapper is signed check a few small factors: Was all of their music pulled off streaming services at any point and re-uploaded? Do they keep denying they’re signed to a label? Also was the cover art of all their music changed to no longer step on copyright infringement? Shout 2 Lil Peep! Anyway, Flex Like Ouuuuuuuu.
  • I also wanted to mention that I went to see Trippie Redd, last night, which was amusing. I’m still a little annoyed he didn’t play this song:
  • But, lol can’t complain too much when some bro just handed out a free t-shirt and I got to hear “Faneto.” Live music is cool kids.
  • This week, Shout My Tropes will close out this week with our first guest post, because I saw that BTS was rising on the charts and knowing nothing about Kpop asked Joshua Calixto, a freelance writer who mostly focuses on esports at places like Glixel and Kotaku, to write a little bit about the Kpop boy band, whose song “ 네시 (4 O’CLOCK) — R&V” is currently at #17. Thanks for reading this week, the rest of the chart is below and here is Calixto:
  • It’s Kpop boy group BTS’ debut anniversary, and in what has become a yearly tradition, the group is celebrating with ‘Festa’: two straight weeks of special content drops. Along with dance practice videos, covers, and member profiles, last week they released “네시 (4 O’CLOCK)” — a caramel-laced ballad featuring the lesser-heard baritone of Kim “V” Tae-hyung along with a verse — and even some singing — from Kim “Rap Monster” Nam-joon. It’s an unplugged look at the BTS expanded universe, where Rapmon and V tag team on breathy, clean acoustic production, and where Rapmon can revisit his roots as a Soundcloud struggle rapper.
