On The SoundCloud Charts (6–9–2017)

Lol, I forgot to write this week, so kind of rushing this weeeeeeeek.

• This week we have our first back-to-back #1 song in “XO Tour Llif3.” Honestly I don’t have much else to add to the power of “XO Tour Llif3,” except that multiple friends have texted me to say how bad the radio edit of the song is, which doesn’t surprise me, but I guess I need to be checking out more radio to be able to finally catch it. The radio edit doesn’t include the word “dead,” so who really knows what all of Lil Uzi Vert’s friends are. Maybe they’re alive.

• When I was looking at the chart earlier this week the New Orleans duo the $uicideboy$ had multiple songs on the Top 50, but right now the only one they still have the chart is “Venom” at #40. Honestly speaking that is a good thing, because these two make fairly awful music to me. It’s clearly post-Spaceghostpurrp SoundCloud rap, which means its a couple of white kids who sound like old Three 6 Mafia and Tommy Wright III records. Not to be entirely rude, because I certainly don’t mind new rappers mining older rap styles — I like this bad New Jack Song that They. just put out — but like SGP already did this at the top of the decade, so I don’t really need to hear this again. But, if you spend anytime on SoundCloud you’ll come across these bros, so needed to speak a little on them. Also I wonder what label they’re singed or about to be signed to, lol.
• Not be a downer, because sorry if this week is a bit bleh in terms of quality of the music, but I needed to mention this one particular song.

• “Redbone” by Childish Gambino is a fairly whatever song to me — like most of Clildish Gambino’s discography, even overlooking the fact it’s just a Bootsy Collins song. But I needed to make mention of hit here, because the fucking memes of this song have done something almost more impressive than “Bad and Boujee” or “Black Beatles” in that it made a straight ahead r&b song into a hit. Now “Location” by Khalid was a Top 40 song, but right now in 2017 finding r&b success is near impossible, so bless the Meme Gods for allowing this song to rise up to #22 on the charts this week. Also the meme attached to this song is fairly obnoxious and stupid, but lol #memes

Hold me to this next week, because I wanted to try and start diving into the SoundCloud accounts that unofficially host songs and haven’t yet got yanked by a major label for copyright claims. Now of course me writing this probably increases that chances by .00000124%, but lol this song has over seven million plays and is at #24 on an account with less than 1.5k followers and a near 1:1 follow ratio. I’m sure it’s just some kid uploading his favorite songs, but there are other accounts that explicitly exist to repost other songs for money and promotion, which again I’ll get into another week. I wanted to just mention this one, because there are so many fake artists accounts on SoundCloud it’s fun to try and see which ones are fan accounts or one trying to make a quick buck by gaming the system. And to it’s credit “Slow Grind Promotions” feels fairly innocuous.
