This Photo Still Kills Me

[The #1 Spot] — Still reigning at the top of the SoundCloud charts is “XO Tour Llif3.” My only two observations this week are that the plays this week dipped below three million, which is the lowest a #1 song has been since I started doing this. Honestly there hasn’t been enough time in doing these charts to get a sense if this is a trend I should be more of, but mentioning it here to put down a flag. Also where the fuck is Luv Is Rage 2, I don’t wanna speak out of turn and speak ill of our streaming overlords at Atlantic Records, B U T I hope to god they aren’t holding this album back for some meme to make this song even more popular. It’s already at 100 million plays on SoundCloud alone, it’s been in the Billboard Top 10 for weeks. Where Is The Album?

The Official Version Of The Song

[Never Forget] — If you’ve noticed on the charts the last couple months there were two version of Playboi Carti’s “Woke Up Like This” in theTop 50. There was the official version and there was a version on this page called AWGE, named after A$AP Rocky’s creative group, and one that simply re-uploads other SoundCloud rap seemingly for their own benefit. The funny thing is that over the last few weeks the AWGE version and not the official one was steadily climbing up the charts, while the official version was sinking downward. Someone at Interscope probably noticed and got the unofficial version pulled — this is very fun to watch on YouTube when an artist just gets signed, but I’m kind of surprised it took so long. This AWGE account also says to message for reposts and exclusives, which I did and never heard back, but I’ll say one day I need to further dive into that particular sub-culture of SoundCloud of reposts. The weird black markets of internet streaming sites is always a fun place to poke around and ask questions.

[*Takeoff Voice* Migos] —I’ve been sitting on this particular trend for a little bit, but let’s chat a little about Migos. Right now Migos have 5 songs in the Top 50 that range from #12 with “Slippery” to #46 on “Peak A Boo” Lil Yachty’s “big” single from Teenage Emotions. The Atlanta trio, who are soaking in all the mainstream spotlight, are right now having the best year of their career with a #1 song (“Bad And Boujee”), numerous lesser hits (“T-Shirt,” “Slippery”), and opening for Future’s fairly successful stadium tour. Again, I love Migos and wish the best for them, but their recent music is fairly middling to me, even Quavo’s guest verses, because there is such a formula to their songwriting that it needs to be really something stand out at this point. Still for a group that essentially were a Lil Pump meme, before Lil Pump was even a teenager, it is impressive they’ve turned their careers into rap’s most important group. Gotta give it them for that, also bless them and Young Thug for putting out their music on SoundCloud. 300 clearly understands that their fan base will probably only stream their music, so why segregate them from the rest of SoundCloud community, join in on the fun.

[The Paper Of Record] — Yesterday the New York Times came out with a giant article on SoundCloud rap that is very much worth a read if you’re reading this blog and care at all about this music. I won’t step on Jon’s words too much, but certainly check out the Sunday edition of the paper, because the layout for the piece in print is wonderful.

[Closing Note] — I didn’t get to PnB Rock, Ski Mask The Slump God, and Young Thug all having multiple new songs on the chart this week, mostly because the songs are good, but not great to me. But such is life. I’m thinking soon I’ll do a week on another genre specific chart, just got a number of blog, freelance, and life things to juggle so figuring out all of this in real time. So thanks for reading this strange strange blog!
