[The weekly Shout My Tropes snapshot of SoundCloud’s Top 50 songs and other curious chart trends. ]

[The #1 Spot] — The reign of “XO Tour Llif3” finally ends this week with Lil Pump’s “Molly” hitting to #1. The last few weeks I’ve been writing how Lil Pump’s moment might be happening now and “Molly” looks to be the song that might get the rapper his first real mainstream hit. I slightly doubt that this song will be able to become a real Top 40 mainstream hit, but Lil Pump is a living meme and if more people spend more time digging through his insane YouTube videos then perhaps there will be a Lil Pump challenge to be found and profited upon. Well I’ll say at least he isn’t on Atlantic who appear to have forgotten that Lil Uzi Vert released the most popular rap song of the last three months in officially announcing his or even properly teasing his next album Luv is Rage 2. Uzi 🗣 Deserves 🗣 Better.

[A Preview?]“Wild Thoughts,” the painfully mediocre collaboration between Bryson Tiller and Rihanna with is further lessened by DJ Khaled, continues to climb up the charts this week as it lands at #26. The reason to highlight the track this week was that in the last week the song went from a full song on SoundCloud just into a preview of the track. In case one isn’t flooded ads for the service on Instagram Stories, SoundCloud Go is SoundCloud’s own for pay streaming platform. The odd thing is that usually major artists (Drake, Future, etc.) who would/should dominate these charts don’t put full songs up on SoundCloud and instead only provide previews of songs. That’s why when “Wild Thoughts” debuted my initial thought was that it must be an unofficial fan upload. But when I looked at the account it was Khaled’s official account, since I was on vacation I haven’t gotten a chance to email anyone about this, but I don’t get exactly why this track went from a full one to a preview. I’m sure it nothing major, but I’ll say I think this may be the song’s peak because preview tracks rarely rack up enough views to crack the Top 50.

[Trippie Redd Season Is Here] — Not to reduce anything Lil Uzi Vert does to a meme, but the narrative of “XO Tour Llif3” being an emo song is a funny one. I’ve said before and I don’t disagree, but Trippie Redd is much closer to that ideal than the rest of Lil Uzi Vert’s discography might show. He isn’t a full blown wanna be rockstar like Lil Peep, but in the genre slush that is “SoundCloud Rap” songs like “It Takes Time” and “Luv Scares/You Hurt Me,” which sits at #50 this are real bratty whining about a girl Warped Tour shit. Trippie also scored another Top 50 song with XXXTentacion remixing his song “Oowee.” The “remix” sounds poorly stitched together with a fairly so-so the Broward County lightning rod, somehow this remix and the official video, also released this week, are not an improvement on the original version that leaked a couple months back. The quality of the songs may be iffy, but perhaps whatever Universal Music Group sub-label that Trippie may or may not be signed to is trying to make it into the real SoundCloud “Magnolia,” cause Carti has now surpassed such limiting nomenclature.

[Closing Note] — The last couple weeks I’ve been trying to talk to people who run promotional SoundCloud pages, the one that upload songs by major artists and ones that will repost songs for other artists for a fee. The practice is fairly shady and clearly some low level internet scamming, but I’ve been amused to see that the couple accounts I spoke to were shortly after deleted. Either they deleted them for whatever reason or maybe SoundCloud or a label caught up to them and axed em. Well, I’m off finally off of vaca so let me get to those emails.

  • “*”Indicates the song isn’t on an official artist page.
  • **Medium doesn’t like the formatting of this song, so lol the stats were: 1.02 Million Plays and a -6 decrease on the chart from last week.
  • ***This song has charted previously, but the first time since I started keeping record.
  • ****This is deceptively tagged “Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee — Despacito (Audio) ft. Justin Bieber” but it’s just a cover by this dude JP Music. SoundCloud is wild.
