15 years ago we as a small nuclear family of 4 ( leaving my eldest behind at University in Scotland) made a bold and possibly foolish move to go and live in a country we hadn’t even visited…..and where we knew no one.

That could have gone pear shaped right? Well we could always have slunk home with our tails between our legs.

I am happy to report however that we managed to fit right in and made many friends really quickly. The reason that this went so well, is I’m sure, because that we took great care about where we put down our roots.

We had a little list of things that were very important like proximity to transport links and closeness to beaches, shops and services, and because we had young children, schools.

Mordialloc beachside suburb ( but they still call it a city) in Melbourne, Australia, ticked all these boxes and more. 24 km south-east of Melbourne’s central business district, it boasted a lovely golden beach and a train station as well as many restaurants and cafes and a busy Main Street.

I could have talked about the big city Melbourne.. and it’s a great place for sure, but I spend a lot more of my time here in Mordialloc… it’s a hugely popular place and gets VERY busy in the Summer.

Mordialloc is probably one of the bestkept secrets of Melbourne, it is a little diamond! As soon as we alighted from the train on our search for a place to live, we knew this was the place. The beach is sensational, actually, and part of a huge chain of beautiful continuous beaches. As I mentioned cafes and restaurants are superb and Mordy as it’s affectionately known, is proximate to city (both via car and train) which is great. My kids had great schools to go to and really enjoy the lifestyle.

The name Mordialloc is an unusual one and in case you wondered what it means..it’s derived from the term moordy yallock which originated from the Aboriginal language Boonwurrung, which is listed in some sources as muddy creek, and in others as “little sea.”

All I can say is it’s fringed by a very beautiful sea, golden beaches within walking distance and after living most of my life in freezing but admittedly beautiful Edinburgh, Mordy is a little blessing.
