The Madonnina is a statue of the Virgin Mary at the top of Milan Cathedral, the Duomo, in Italy.

The Madonnina spire, one of the main features of the cathedral, was erected in 1774 at the height of 108.5 m (356 ft). Set at the top of the Great Spire, it is a polychrome statue of the Virgin who was being brought to heaven by angels.

The Madonnina is a symbol of the city. It is the subject of the most traditional Milanese song, “O mia bella Madonnina”; a football match that shows the local rivalry between the city’s two football clubs, A.C. Milan and Inter is called “Derby della Madonnina”.

If the Duomo is the symbol of Milan in the world, the Madonnina, that shines on the highest spire of the Cathedral, represents the heart and soul of the city. It is a beloved landmark for people who live and work in Milan, who ask her to protect them, and it is often a symbol of hope. On bright and sunny days, you can see the golden statue from a distance.
