In what is described as well-deserving, Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You continues to dominate headlines and amass critical acclaim for its first season since it premiered about a year ago on BBC One and HBO.

At the Banff Rockie Awards, which honours excellence in international television, and features professionals from around the world to participate in seminars, master classes, and pitching opportunities, I May Destroy You won in both the Limited Series and Grand Jury Prize categories.

The series, also featuring Michaela as its lead, is about Arabella, a young Twitter-star-turned-novelist who sets out to rebuild her life after a rape. It also stars Nigerian actress, Weruche Opia, who plays one of her closest friends, Terry.

The series has picked up a Producers Guild of America (PGA), and Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards nominations, and a pair of Independent Spirit Awards since its premiere.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the series has been described as “at once brave and delicate, untangling the trauma of sexual assault with dark humour and moments of deep discomfort all held together on the strength of Michaela Coel’s undeniable talent.”

It has featured on several year-end lists. Review aggregator, Metacritic, listed it as the best TV show of the year based on critic top 10 lists, with more than thirty #1 placements.

Each year, U.S. TV shows compete against international contemporaries at the Rockie Awards. At this year’s competition, the Brits picked up 11 trophies, U.S. TV creators picked up 10 and Canadian producers took home five Rockies.
