Rethinking size

One of my big-boy dream is to own a little cottage to get away from life.

When we decided to take a small trip to Barbados, we looked around on Airbnb to see if we can find a decently priced stay. With Janeane doing most of the leg-work, we found a brand new tiny house.

To me, it was a hipster game.

I’ve been in tiny houses before and the key point of them was to see how small one can go. A race to smallest footprint. To me, it was a hipster game. How small can I build something, without actually worrying about it being livable.

I keep reading stories about a couple living in Minneapolis, Seattle, or Portland spending upwards of $60,000 towards building what is essentially a shed on wheels. Yes, they look sweet. Yes, one might consider it an engineering marvel. Sure, you are saving the earth from not owning a huge home, heating it, and furnishing it. But, for the past few years, I’ve been reading more articles about these same couples moving out (or breaking up) and getting a bigger home.

Bedroom, living room, and kitchen in less than 200 sq feet.

So why then?

So, why is it my big-boy dream to own a little cottage away?

Staying at this Airbnb, I’ve noticed that Janeane and I do need our space apart from time to time, but we still enjoy being in the same room together. A hotel (motel or hostel) room doesn’t allow us to ‘get away’ since they are one cramped room. With this cottage, we’ve been able to sleep, shower, cook, write, read, and just chill without the feeling of a cramped space. We can get away, but still enjoy being together.

The headaches of keeping a big living space is washed away and we can focus on enjoying the vacation.

Views like this.

Side note: Without feeling like a #humblebrag, I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to sleep with the doors open so you can hear the ocean.
