Today we’re launching The Sigmas Slack team

Come and join our new hotspot for data journalists. We’ve set it up to build a community that endures beyond The Sigma Awards themselves, and ignite collaborations and discussions between members of our community.

We will regularly setup live chats with international experts on topics that matter to the data journalism community, and The Sigmas Slack team will be the center stage for that.

We have partnered with regional data journalism groups all over the world this year, and we hope to use The Sigmas Slack team as a laidback space where we can host live events to compliment the outstanding initiatives and projects already out there to serve the international data journalism community.

Our first live chat will take place on Thursday 21 January 2020 and will tackle the following topic:

A world tour of your data journalism challenges from 2020

It will be split into two sessions at 9am GMT + 2pm ET so that folks all over the world can join in at a decent time.

The first session will run from 9am to 10am GMT and will gather some amazing speakers, such as Waqas Naeem from Media Matters and the Pakistan Data Journalism Awards, Seungjin Shin and Hyejin Kwon from the Korean Data Journalism Awards, Amr Eleraqi of the Arab DJN (Egypt), and Alastair Otter from Media Hack in South Africa, with Marianne Bouchart from HEI-DA (France) and Kuek Ser Kuang Keng (Malaysia) as moderators.

The second session will run from 2pm to 3pm ET, and gather this stellar lineup: Adriano Belisario from Open Knowledge Brasil, Jennifer LaFleur from The Investigative Reporting Workshop and Steven Rich from The Washington Post, both representing IRE in the US, with Marianne Bouchart from HEI-DA (France) to talk about challenges in Europe and moderate at the same time (more speakers to be announced).

To sign up and join this Slack team, all you need to do is fill this Google form and we’ll send you an invite by email. You only need to sign up once to access all live chats and discussions we’ll set up there.

The Sigmas Slack team is free to join and open to everyone keen to get involved in the international data journalism community.

The Sigma Awards is a competition to celebrate the best data journalism from around the world. Striding into its second year, it’s also here to empower, elevate and enlighten the global community of data journalists. It was created by Aron Pilhofer (Temple University) and Gina Chua (formerly Reginald Chua, Reuters), with support from Simon Rogers(Google), Marianne Bouchart (HEI-DA), and Kuek Ser Kuang Keng (HEI-DA). It is supported by the Google News Initiative.
