AskLabs: Brain Health Questions for our Company Leaders
Each week we ask the members of OPEN Labs (an innovation lab systematically changing social norms so those of us with Bipolar have the Hope we need to live Openly) to share their knowledge by answering a question from non-members about the condition, its effects, and advice on how to help. You can also ask them yourself at the Brain Crawl at Denver Startup Week!
This week we’re answering a question with questions:
If you were guaranteed there wouldn’t be any adverse effects, what questions would you ask the leaders of your company?
Here’s what our members had to say:
I would ask VC’s about their real beliefs in hiring/investing in people with brain conditions. I’m curious to know their opinions on the real value of someone with a different way of thinking if I knew I would receive a genuine answer.
Why doesn’t the company provide more resources and support for mental health?
Hypothetically I would ask how they view brain health as a line item. Is it an asset or a liability, what’s the justification for the classification, and how they approach management of the asset vs. liability?
I would ask them how they would change recognition and reward systems to incentivize the acceptance of neuro diverse colleagues. In addition to bottom line, they should promote more elastic and bendable operational capabilities to allow for the inventions and needs of neuro diversity’s impact on “how we work”.
I would ask how aware they are of Bipolar and other brain conditions in their employees? Are employees disclosing their conditions? Are supervisors expressing concern? If so, what’s the protocol to help those employees maintain their health and excel at work?
I would ask them about their own brain health in epic depth and then engage in a discussion about how an OPEN office of neuro-diverse humans could work 10x better :-).
Have a burning question you’d like to ask individuals living in recovery with Bipolar, their supporters, related subject matter experts, and leaders in workplace brain health? Let us know, and we’ll AskLabs!
Better yet, ask them yourself at the Brain Crawl at Denver Startup Week!
