Heading into his 17th year in the NFL, Tom Brady will be the oldest starting quarterback in the league at age 40. Generally speaking, 40 is an age where a quarterback’s skill can decline significantly. Very rarely do we see a player find success on the wrong side of 40, but an array of dietary adjustments and the benefit of Bill Belichick’s offensive scheme has allowed Brady to thrive.

Hanging like a dark cloud over Brady’s 2017–18 season is one thing that any NFL fan is familiar with, the Madden Curse. When announced as Madden’s cover athlete, Brady was one to put down the superstition stating, “I’m not one to believe in curses…” Well unfortunately for Tom Terrific, the Madden Curse is very real. Over the last decade, we’ve seen plenty of emerging NFL stars watch their season, and in some cases careers, go up in flames after appearing on the cover of EA Sports’ popular game. However, if there is anyone capable of rising above the scrutiny, it’s Tom Brady. Brady has been the epitome of mental toughness throughout his career, tuning out many distractions and thriving against NFL defenses. So I’m putting it out on front street Brady will break the Madden Curse this year.

People may wonder how Brady will break the curse and the answer is that he’ll have to try to top his performance from 2016, a year in which he led the greatest Super Bowl comeback in NFL history, storming back from a 28–3 deficit against the Atlanta Falcons. With this offense New England has assembled for 2017, I think he is very capable of catching the record breaking numbers he posted in 2007. The addition of star wide receiver Brandin Cooks by trade gives Tom Brady and established deep threat with back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons under his belt. Pair him with a healthy Rob Gronkowski and newly acquired Dwayne Allen, and you have a pretty formidable offense even with the loss of Julian Edelman to an ACL injury.

Brady is already the greatest quarterback of all-time and is only making it more difficult for anyone else to challenge his legacy. While it may seem a bit unrealistic, Brady has stated that he wants to play for at least five more seasons. Given the dominance and success of the New England Patriots, it is very well possible that the greatest of all time will be sticking around for a few more years.
