How to build an awesome startup team
Before you can truly begin to grow, you’ll have to build your team. Team helps startups to grow even when founder is sleeping :-) What are things to care about while building your team ?
1. Talent is everywhere
Recruitment is a big challenge for startups. Initially you should not worry about the location of resource and building a globally spread virtual team is easy to do and cost effective. Specially for software startup Skype, Basecamp and GotoMeeting works well.
2. Run by Ideas not by hierarchy
Most startup make this mistake to build a hierarchy and assume that they are done. Avoid managers at initial stage who just delegates and build nice reports for you instead of getting involved in the vision and actual work. Real contributors who are getting their hands dirty with the problem should be listened and provided authority to take decisions.
3. More policies less output
No startup can be successful with average output from the team. Best way to get the maximum effort from the team is to motivate them by sharing the success stories, customer feedback, appreciation of work and letting them know why they matter. The moment you want to drive the team effort by the policies, it turns to mediocre result from the team.
4. No culture is also a culture
Worrying too much about team culture is not good for startups. Let it evolve by work and individual style of working. All we need to worry about the team output and getting the problem solved.
