Throughout human history, people have revered fertility and birth symbols, from phalluses to patron saints.
Every ancient civilization had important rituals focusing on the creation of new life and plentiful harvests. The Mesopotamians are believed to have made figurines for use in fertility rites, while the Egyptians had countless gods to call upon to aid fertility. Major pagan rituals occurred in spring, celebrating rebirth and fertility. The arrival of Christianity did not end the belief in fertility symbols. Indeed, they are so deeply rooted in our culture that many are still used today.
FERTILITY GODS:
From the earliest times and in every culture, the regular birth of children ensured survival. Cultures developed many deities to watch over and promote fertility.
