The cultural richness and spiritual tradition of Bharat have given rise to various poetic forms. Among them, the writings of Bhats (Kashmiri Pandit Bards) stand out, especially those composed in praise of the Vaishnava Sikh Gurus.

Here we explore an extraordinary verse composed by Bhat Nalh, found in the Guru Granth Sahib on page 1400.

Written in the poetic form known as “Chhand Radd,” this verse captures the essence of divine intervention and protection

Ang 1400 of Guru Granth Sahib | Bhat Nalh Ji

Now preserve the honor of thy Bhat (Kashmiri Pandit Bard)

Today, as devotee Prahlad was once protected

And demon Hiranyakashipu was torn apart by hands [of Shri Vishnu]

And then again when you saved Draupadi’s honor, O Hari!

By giving her ever more clothes as she was disrobed.

And as Sudama was salvaged from his misfortunes

And deeds of Ganika who chanted [Name of Ram] were resolved.

O blessed True Guru [4th Nanak Ram Das], if you’re pleased..

It’s the age of Kali, do save the honor of your Bhat servant.

The beatific verses of Bhat Nalh provide an insight into the philosophical understanding of the time. They weave together mythology, devotion, and divine grace into a poetic tapestry that resonates even today.
