Star Citizen to Sell Fake Real Estate

In a move that would make mortgage repackagers proud, future future game Star Citizen, currently in pre-release/early access/mid commerce has started selling virtual land packages.

For USD100 you can get the right to one day choose an 8km by 8km plot of land in space. The plot is zoned for residential, commercial or industrial use and ripe for speculators wanting some return on the thousands of actual dollars they have sunk into space ships in the sci fi life sim due at an undisclosed future point.

The more this game delays its release by adding in extra widgets and details (coming next, utility bills!) the more appealing it gets. Maybe the growing middle class that has been locked out of real real estate can flock to fake space real estate and instead of turning the virtual laser cannons on each other can pool their land and create an unreal utopia that will never fall victim to exploitation, in-fighting, or the community’s own greed.

As long as the game stays fake released, and the land unobtainable, the dream can remain real.
