Street Fighter x Shadowverse to Do Even Less Than Street Fighter x Tekken

Capcom, always ahead of the game when it comes to pimping out their characters, have struck a deal with Cygames for a select few of their characters to appear in free to play CCG Shadowverse.

The seven characters will act as leaders in particular classes. The select few who have been given the prestige of jumping from game to game, Gwent style, are:

  • Cammy (Forestcraft)
  • Chun Li (Swordcraft)
  • Juri (Runecraft)
  • Ryu (Dragoncraft)
  • M. Bison (Shadowcraft)
  • Vega (Bloodcraft)
  • Karin (Havencraft)

Where each different leader in Gwent offers a fun new ability to keep players building their decks to beat their opponent in a surprisingly deep card game, Shadowverse makes no such mistake. Instead, these new leaders are reskins of existing cards.

Being a free to play game, you would be forgiven for assuming that Cygames wants to charge you for these new skins. If so, you’d be wrong. Maybe. In a move showing Cygames’ transparency, their press release states:

Please note that although Shadowverse is free to download and play, the Street Fighter V related content may require additional in-game purchases, and the final details of the collaboration may be subject to change.

That moment you realise that doing nothing is better than Street Fighter x Tekken

Cygames have refined the art of the press release, providing answers to players' questions. Predicting that players will want to know if these cards are paid DLC, Cygames says “we don’t know.” Thinking that players might be sceptical, wanting to ensure that this is a done deal before preordering DLC they may or may not have to pay for, Cygames offers a resounding “We don’t know!” Players have long thought that publishers don’t know what they are doing, and Cygames wears that as a badge of honour — it is something they should be congratulated for.

Unlike Street Fighter x Tekken, where the two franchises meeting resulted in a game far worse than either publisher could have created on their own, the addition to Shadowverse represents no change whatsoever. Players may or may not be asked to pay extra for no change, and the available characters may also change. Assuming that this crossover is a done deal. When asked for comment, Cygames responded to Silent Protagonist, asking “Who the fuck knows?”
