It’s easy to confuse company culture for catered lunches, basketball courts, open floor office spaces, and barbers and salons on staff. Malouf is a company that not only offers these incredible benefits to their employees but believes that company culture is something more.

According to the Malouf team, company culture is:

  • How Employees and management interact
  • Often implied, not defined
  • Developed organically over time
  • The culmination of traits of the employees

Culture From the Top Down

Sam and Kacie Malouf exemplify what good management should be and are one of the keys to the thriving culture within the company. There doesn’t need to be one silver bullet in creating a great company culture, except these two founders genuinely care about the people they work with and want to take care of them and their needs. If anything, great company culture starts from an evaluation of oneself, why we do what we do, and for what reasons.

Employee Happiness

Companies should look to Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs to understand how to better take care of their employees.

According to Malouf, Maslow’s Hierarchy plays a large role in how they craft company culture. Employees can’t perform well if their basic needs aren’t met — they will thrive if they feel fulfilled and empowered, and if they love their work. Finding ways to provide those types of opportunities for employees leads to healthier environments in the workplace.

One Malouf employee was quoted as saying,

“I feel Malouf is a company with a soul. This is more than just a place where money is made. The company has a culture of caring and making a difference.”

Self examination of our motivation and goals when starting a business, building a team, is this first step to understanding if our work has a soul.

Fulfillment and Business Success

Ultimately, fulfillment in the workplace should be the goal and is the result of implementing a great culture, but the business case for caring for your employees and finding ways to empower them speaks for itself. According to data provided by Malouf from various sources, companies with better culture were more profitable, had more fulfilled employees, and happier customers.

All About Why

Ultimately, Malouf has done well through great execution, phenomenal product, and most of all being intentional about why they do what they do. Getting to why is the best thing anyone could do to begin down the path of business success or fulfillment in life.
