Butterfield will lead Vivint Solar, part of the Vivint home automation and security family, the company said on its website. In April CEO Tanguy Serra left for competitor Solar City. Previously Butterfield was managing partner at SageCreek Partners and was CEO of Altiris through its initial public offering and subsequent acquisition by Symantec. He also worked at Vinca Corp., Legato Systems, Novell and WordPerfect Corp.

“This is a critical expansion period for Vivint Solar and we welcome Greg’s record of consistent, annual revenue growth and profitability at both private and public technology companies,” said Vivint Inc. CEO Todd Pedersen in a statement. “His expertise will help widen our customer reach and further develop our technology and team.”

Blackstone Group L.P. bought Vivint for about $2 billion last year. Since then Vivint has named several C-level executives. Those include chief operating officer David Bywater, chief information officer Todd Thompson, Todd Santiago as chief sales officer and Matt Eyring as chief strategy and innovation officer.
