The Oculus Quest is not just a new VR device it’s a cultural event that comes once in a generation.

Like Nintendo, Sega, Playstation, it will be remembered as a turning point in consumer technology history. You will be able to play with up to four friends…

…with up to four friends in some of the titles (in the same room) and with many more people who are not in the same room. It’s a somewhat new feature to be able to see other people who are in VR in the same room as you with their position and their pose correctly estimated. Humanity will make new memories together inside VR. I predict that this will be so incredibly popular that these devices could sell out, but that depends on how many Oculus makes, how well Oculus markets them, and how effective Oculus is at continuing to bring the best developers to the Quest.

I believe that humanity’s most popular stories, perhaps since the first Star Wars in 1977 have been in a way preparing humanity for the age of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality.

A world in which we can be immersed in a book as a virtual story. When Deep Learning can figure out the semantic meaning of a page and a chapter and a two dimensional image and turn all three of those into a holographic AR or VR experience that you can visit with a headset today, and future generations can visit via more direct brain stimulation as is told in the story of Sword Art Online.

The Quest has two controllers that track your hand position in space, it has one headset that tracks your head position in space so you can walk around inside VR, and all the hardware needed to power it is built into the headset itself, so there is no phone or computer needed to power it. It’s VR Ready for the masses. This is what we have been waiting for!

Think of how many times in just the past decade that you have seen movies and tv shows featuring interactive holograms, intelligent robots, and or three-dimensional computer interfaces?

Nerve Gear for SAO (Sword Art Online) is a technology we are researching at NeurotechX in San Francisco, but don’t expect this technology to arrive in our generation (I’m not ruling it out but it’s best to be skeptical).

Yet the Quest is special in part because the hardware is the right value proposition for the mass market, in part because the software line-up is incredible. Quest has everything it needs to become the first mass market VR headset, it has the software, it has the right price, it has the right interactivity, it feels like a Rift with graphics that are just slightly better than the Oculus Go, but good enough to feel like a winning combination of good values.

Don’t even think about getting a Rift S that’s a mistake, I just got a Rift in the mail because I’m part of the Oculus Start developer program and so its useful for my work because Rift and Quest use the exact same Touch controllers, but Rift is boring right, it’s boring because my big heavy VR ready desktop computer is stuck in a tiny office with barely any room to move around.

That’s why Quest is awesome, because you can set it up easily in any room, and you have hardly anything to bring with you, and on top of that Quest is going to have amazing multiplayer software so you can see other people in VR even if they are in the same room as you.

Tilt Brush is confirmed coming to Oculus Quest

It’s all about the Oculus Quest. Even Oculus has said that VR needs to be wireless (at Oculus Connect 5) The Rift S only exists to provide legacy support to old software, and as a developer platform.

The true flagship of VR for Oculus is going to be standalone devices like Oculus Quest.

Quest is also capable of supporting up to 6 people in multiplayer simultaneously in special Arena style configurations that are not meant for consumers.

It appears that Oculus Quest for business will focus on selling hardware bundles, with wall adapters, two face interfaces, extended warranties and dedicated support.

The Oculus Quest group on Facebook put together an amazing list of rumored and confirmed Oculus Quest titles coming soon.

I am super grateful to have been accepted into the Oculus Start program to create software for Rift and Oculus Go, although I was not sent an Oculus Quest for development at this time my app will be launching on Oculus Quest via webXR. You can read about what happened here.
