How to create a Jack-o-Lantern in Tilt Brush

#PaintVR a Jack-o-Lantern

Happy Halloween!

It’s my favorite holiday of the whole year. I love playing dress up so why not make a special occasion out of it by painting a Jack-o-Lantern in Tilt Brush. 🎃

Tutorial Video with Step-by-Step Breakdown

In this video, I am using the HTC Vive, but people who own the Oculus Rift or other Tilt Brush compatible VR systems can follow along as well. Tilt Brush is creative painting program that can be purchased on Steam.

Tutorial Break Down

Once SteamVR and Tilt Brush are both properly setup, take the time to familiarize yourself with the palette of brushed, the color wheel, and the tool options.

For this tutorial, the brushes that you’ll need are:
Orange TOON Brush — body of the Pumpkin
Green TOON Brush — Stem of the Pumpkin
Yellow FIRE Brush-Lantern part of the Jack-o-Lantern*

Pumpkins are plump little squashes. To help form the plump body, there’s a shape guide to help with that under:

TOOLS panel > . . . [More…] > Guides

To make a plump pumpkin, we will need the capsule guide found on the far right of the new window that opened up.

Upon selection of the Capsule Guide, a transparent gridded Capsule should show up. Grab the Capsule by pressing down on the two side buttons (VIVE controllers). Play around to alter the shape and size of your capsule to your desired pumpkiness.

Grab objects by pressing down on the two side buttons

To create the plump ridges on the pumpkin, use the Orange TOON brush (panel #3). TOON brush gives a very full look that are good for creating branches or octopus tentacles. Paint down from the center of the cylinder. The guide will help in making perfect half circles around. Keep doing this around the cylinder until the cylinder is all covered.

The shape should easily form. After this, we do not need the cylinder guide. To deactivate it, go back to the Guide window and press the eyeball icon to Untoggle. Use the color wheel to change the TOON brush color green, go back to the top center point and go up with a angled curve. This creates a sturdy stem.

Tada, you’ve got your pumpkin!

To make the lantern part of the Jack-o-Lantern, Tilt Brush has two light emitting brushes — FIRE and LIGHT brushes. I personally, like the classic look from using the fire brush over the neon sign effect from using the LIGHT brush.

Start with two triangles for the eyes. Since this is your Jack-o-Lantern, you can pick any expression — happy, sad, or the traditional toothy grin. 🎃

Just like that, you’ve got yourself a jack-o-lantern in VR.

Hopefully this was helpful and straightforward. Comment below if you are running into issues and I’ll see where I can help! 🎃
