Doctor Digital will see you now — Karin Verspoor
Machine learning — the use of computational algorithms to find patterns in data — is increasingly being deployed in clinical contexts to support diagnosis and treatment decisions. In the context of growing volumes of clinical data available in electronic form, there is an opportunity to realise dramatic changes in the practice of medicine through the application of large-scale health data analytics and predictive modeling. This talk will introduce a vision for the use of data-driven methods in health, while also raising important questions about the implementation of this vision: is it conceivable that one day your doctor might be replaced by a digital system? What are the risks?
Karin Verspoor is a Professor in the School of Computing and Information Systems and Deputy Director of the Health and Biomedical Informatics Centre at the University of Melbourne. Trained as a computational linguist, Karin’s research primarily focuses on extracting information from clinical texts and the biomedical literature using machine learning methods to enable biological discovery and clinical decision support. Karin has held numerous research posts in the US and Australia, as well as spending 5 years in AI start-ups during the US Tech bubble around Y2K.
The Future of Technology: Insights from TechXLR8 London — Diego Tognola
TechXLR8 is an annual conference covering AR/VR, IoT, 5G, AI, robotics, drones, Blockchain etc. It was one of the main events of London Tech Week in June 2017. This presentation will cover highlights from first hand experience, show floors and various talks from this event.
You will hear about supersonic transport, autonomous drones, robots that smile, connected AI, live music in VR, 3D holograms and UK’s response to Iron Man. There will be examples of how the new technologies are being used in commercial applications and a selection of miscellaneous products and developments worth knowing about.
Diego Tognola is a Principal Technologist at ThoughtWorks, having worked in software delivery since gaining his doctorate in pure Mathematics in 1998. He spends his free time developing a way to “see sound and hear images”. Diego holds a US patent and is committee member of the Melbourne Audio Engineering Society.
New technologies will reshape our workplaces, society and cities sooner than we think. By sharing his impressions from TechXLR8, Diego hopes to raise awareness for this future among the broader community.
