In a significant shift in the world of typography, Microsoft has announced Aptos, formerly known as Bierstadt, as its new default font. This change comes after a 15-year reign of Calibri, which itself had replaced Times New Roman in 2007. The transition to Aptos will be implemented across Microsoft programs in the coming months.

Si Daniels, a principal programme manager at Microsoft, shared in a recent blog post, “We begin the final phase of this major change where Aptos will start appearing as the new default font across Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel for hundreds of millions of users. And, over the next few months, it will roll out to be the default for all our customers.”

Aptos is described as a “bold, well-defined, directive, and constrained” font that “embodies professionalism, adaptability, subtle flourishes of expression, and more clarity.” Despite the change, Microsoft assures that users will retain the flexibility to set any other font as the default, including Calibri, Times New Roman, Helvetica, or Arial, in their settings.
