In mid-December, MOZA Racing provided the handbrake and the formula wheel Mod for the ES steering wheel. The official name is Formula Wheel Mod.

I own the MOZA R5 bundle (Below is my review of R5 bundle) and this includes ES Steering wheel.

First, the price is $39. Buy the R5 bundle and want formula style steering? I thought it would be a very attractive product for those who thought, so I decided to review it again this time.

First of all, my personal impression of the ES formula steering

For the time being, I will write the conclusion first. More details will be explained in the article.

It is sturdy and beautifully made. Compared to purchasing a new steering wheel, it is set quite inexpensively. For those who already have ES steering, it is one of the very good options to get a formula type.

If you change from a round shape to a formula type, the steering will be lighter, so I think it will be easier to transmit FFB when using a wheelbase with a smaller torque like the R5. In addition, since the top surface of the steering wheel is flat, information on the LCD monitor is easier to see than with a round steering wheel.

People who feels happy when Buying a MOZA ES Formula Steering

・Those who have or want to purchase the R5 bundle or ES steering, and who want a formula type and want to keep costs down
・Those who feel that it is difficult to see information on the LCD monitor above the steering wheel when using the ES steering wheel.

People who can’t be so happy when buying a MOZA ES formula steering wheel

・ Those who do not have ES steering
・ Those who want a steering wheel with a little more functionality
・Those who want to frequently replace the round type and the formula type. (You will take a little time to replace them)
・Those who want to start by using a paddle clutch. (Please purchase GS, RS, or FSR steering. They have analog paddles.)
・ People who are not dissatisfied with the round steering wheel

MOZA ES Formula Steering Unboxing Review

Just by replacing the metal part of the steering wheel, the round steering wheel on the right side of the photo will be reborn as a formula wheel. The box on the left is the product box. The package is very compact. I think shipping cost will be cheaper as well.

I took it out of the box. It is packed like this.

I took everything out of the box below. The main unit and one large and one small screwdriver are enclosed. Also the kit contains a hex wrench. Now you can replace the steering wheel. Stickers are also packed.

The contents of the stickers are as follows. For your reference.

As for the steering wheel, it seems very well made. The material of the frame is aluminum. The grip part is rubber. The texture of the grip was similar to that of Fanatec’s McLaren steering wheel. It may be a good idea to hold it casually with your bare hands.
Below is from MOZA official web page.

The grip is injection molded using eco-friendly TPU rubber. Anti-slip, sweat-proof, durable, and luxurious.

The size of the ES formula steering wheel is 280mm, which is the same size as the original round steering wheel of the ES steering wheel. It is also the same as FSR steering wheel, which is the flagship of the MOZA steering wheel. (Will compare later)

I wonder the rigidity when I notie that the top and middle parts are not connected. I checking hardly and found that there is no problem with rigidity at all. It’s solid.

Difference between formula type and round type of MOZA ES steering wheel

Due to the camera shooting angle, the ES looks a little larger, but the width is almost the same.
The big difference is the weight and the shape of the steering top.

As you can see in the image below, the round steering wheel can get in the way of seeing the information you need. If you are annoyed by it, I think it will be one of the motivations to replace it with a formula type steering.

MOZA ES formula steering weight comparison

The weight of the ES formula steering alone is 500g. (Since it is a cheap measurement device, please use it as a reference)

On the other hand, the weight of the round steering is 908g, and by changing to the formula steering, it is possible to reduce the weight by 400g, which is expected to improve the steering response.

How to replace the MOZA ES steering wheel

It’s easy to do, just remove the 6 big screws and 3 small screws and replace them.
First, remove the 6 screws on the front of the round steering wheel with the included hex wrench. These six screws are coated with anti-loosening material, so you will feel resistance when turning them to some extent, but please do not worry about that as it is due to the anti-loosening effect.

Once removed, you will need to unscrew the 3 small screws on the back. This one at the bottom and

Two screws under the left and right paddles.
If you insert a screwdriver into the hole in the paddle as shown in the picture below, you can access the screw under the paddle.

After that, combine the ES formula steering and fix the 6 screws on the front to complete.
By the way, the three screws removed from the back of the round steering wheel will not be used, so fix them in the original position of the round steering wheel.

And the process so far is easy to do. Now, if you’re thinking of playing rounds and formulas every other day or every few hours, I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s fine if it’s just a one-time replacement, but it’s troublesome to screw on and off, and there’s a risk of losing it. So, if you are thinking of replacing very frequently, please consider purchasing another set or purchasing a GS steering wheel or FSR steering wheel.
If it’s every other week, I think you can handle it with periodical replacement

The combined weight is 1126g. The round type is 1532g, which is 406g heavier than this. It has a solid feel and is rigid. Though I own only R5 wheel base, it seems that there is no problem even if it is attached to a wheelbase with higher torque than R5.

By the way, the FSR steering weighs 1522g.

ES steering hole size

I received a simple drawing about the hole. The PCD is 55mm with 6 Φ5.4mm holes. The holes are zagged.

The steering has increased again lol

This is a review on the actual R5, but I will upload it at a later date, so please wait a little longer! !
